W: Hello. This is Alice speaking. May I speak to John?
M: Oh, I’m sorry. He’s on duty at the post office.
  Text 7
M: What time do you go to school?
W: Eight o’clock. I still have forty minutes.
  Text 8
M: Excuse me. Do you know where I can exchange money?
W: Sure. Please take the escalator upstairs and turn right. The bank is next to the bookstore.
  Text 9
W: Jack flew to Chicago last night and then took some passengers from there to Dellas.
M: Yeah, but he couldn’t land because the airport in Dellas was snowed in.
  Text 10
M: Maria, I saw your father at the subway station this morning.
W: Sure. He usually goes to work at that time.
  Text 11
W: I’d like to send this letter to New York. Surface mail, please.
M: Ok, that’ll be four dollars.
  Text 12
  W: Hello. This is Mary.
M: Hello, Mary. This is Tom. I’ve tried to phone my wife several times, but the line is busy all the time. Could you please go next door and give her a message?
  Text 13
M: Hi, Sally. It’s me, Jim. I’m calling to talk about Young People’s Film Week. It starts next Monday. Are you planning to see any of the films? Perhaps we could go together.
W: Well, I really want to see Space Dogs. That’s my first choice. What day are you going to see that?
M: I think I’ll go on Monday evening at 6:30.
W: Great. I’ll go with you. My second choice is Ali’s Surprise. It’s on at 4:30 on Tuesday.
M: I don’t think I’ll go to see that one. There’s another one about friends that I’d rather see. It’s called Yes, Madam! I’m going to see it on Saturday afternoon at 2:30. Do you want to come?
  W: I can’t. It’s my mother’s birthday on Saturday. And we’re having a big lunch for her.
M: Is that so? Then give my best wishes to your mother.
  W: Sure. Thank you.
  Text 14
M: How do you feel about your trip to Beijing, Emma?
W: I’m very excited but I’m also a little worried.
M: I’m not surprised! You and your friends are riding your bicycles from Wuhan to Beijing, aren’t you?
W: Oh, no! We’re taking buses and trains. But we’re going to stop at several places along the way, and ride around the countryside. I’m not worried about the riding. I’m worried about the weather.
M: Are you worried about the sun?
W: Not really. I always wear a hat and carry a bottle of water.
M: Well, you needn’t worry about snow!
W: (laughs)No. I know it doesn’t snow heavily around Beijing. And in summer of course, it doesn’t snow at all!
  Text 15
  W: Mike, you look worried.
M: Yes, Ms Paula. I’m having trouble learning English.
W: You said you liked English. What’s the problem?
  M: I can’t get the pronunciation right.
W: Well, why don’t you borrow the teacher’s tapes? You can listen to them at home after school.
M: That’s a good idea. But what about the new words?
W: You can write the new words in your notebook and study them at any time.
M: That might really help! Thanks.
W: Can you understand when people talk to you?
M: No, not always. Sometimes I just don’t understand what people are saying.
W: Why don’t you join an English club to practice speaking English? The English club meets on Tuesday and Friday.
M: I will go. The only other problem I have is that I don’t get much writing practice.
W: Maybe you should find a pen pal.
M: That sounds like a funny way to practice writing. Thanks, Ms Paula.
  Text 16
John’s birthday is on August 6th. His parents are going to have a party for him. He is very happy about it. He would like to invite his friends to the party. Last Sunday night, while John was in his room, his mother walked in.
“Are you still doing your homework?” she asked.
“No, I’m writing a letter to Uncle Tom,” John answered.
John’s mother was very surprised because John never wrote letters to anyone.
“Are you asking him to come to your birthday party?”
“No,” John answered, “Uncle Tom never comes to my birthday parties.”
“Then what are you writing about?” his mother asked. “Will you read me the letter?”
“OK,” John said, “but I haven’t finished it. I have only written two lines. I’ll read them to you.”
“Dear Uncle Tom, thank you very much for sending me such a nice gift. I hope…” His mother stopped him. “But Uncle Tom hasn’t sent you any gifts.”
“I know,” John answered. “I’m not thanking him for this year’s gift. I’m thanking him for last year’s. You know, it’s never too late to thank him.”
