标题: Nick不止是人名！

I saw the baby was about to fall off and caught it just in the nick of time.

　　 Hi，Nick！其实它不只是一个人名，今天我们就来学习nick的其他用法，比如千钧一发的“nick”，和宰客的“nick”！
　　“Nick” 作为 “the precise moment”的意思最早出现于16世纪70年代，据说在16世纪后半叶得以广泛应用；到17世纪书面材料中出现了nick of time这个词组。
　　“In the nick of time”的比喻义至今还很常用，意思是 “just in time; at the necessary moment” (正是时候，在紧要关头）, 例如 “I saw the baby was about to fall off and caught it just in the nick of time.” （我见这婴儿快要掉下去，便及时把它抓住了。） “Nick of time”的这种用法最早只用nick一个单词来表达就可以了，这可能是源于“nick”这个字的原意: “a nick” 不是“a large hole，or a scrape，or anything else that is diffuse”, 而是“a small，sharp，indentation whose exact location is clear”, 因此nick就逐渐有了“the precise (moment)”的意思了。
　　如今，nick作为名词在英式英语中有prison的意思，不过是一种非正式的用法，例如 “ten years in the nick”（狱中十年）；nick作为动词在美式英语中还有“敲诈、宰客”的意思，例如 “They nicked me for $30 just to have my hair cut.” （光给我剪发，他们就要了我30美元。）
