标题: 老师和学生的有趣对话

有一次，一位化学老师正在上课，他发现有个学生心不在焉，就出现了下面的对话。请仔细体味：　　

Once a chemistry teacher was giving a lesson. Suddenly he noticed a student who was absent-minded. He asked the student, “What’s matter?”

“Never mind!” answered the student.　　

“What’s mind, then?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

这个故事十分有趣，同时又包含着较深的语法现象。咋一看，没什么可笑的地方。但是，我们分析一下就会发现其中的奥妙：一位化学老师正在上课，他发现一个学生心不在焉，就问了他一个问题：What’s matter? （什么是物质？）　　

可是，学生误解成了What’s the matter? (你怎么回事？)，所以回答：　　

Never mind. (不要紧，没关系。)　　

老师觉得学生回答得很正确，因为Never mind. 可以理解成“决不是意识。”　　

因此，又问，What’s mind, then? (那么，什么是意识？)　　

学生说：It doesn’t matter. （没关系。）他本来想说It isn’t matter. （意识不是物质。），但是误说成了It doesn’t matter.(　

通过这个对话，我们发现：matter既是动词，又是名词。matter作名词讲，意为“物质”，是不可数名词。有the无the，意思差别悬殊：matter不加冠词是“物质”，加了冠词是“麻烦事，故障，问题”等，相当于形容词wrong的用法。所以，在What’s the matter?中，句子的主语是What，而不是the matter, 因此，我们常说：I don’t know what is the matter. 而不说I don’t know what the matter is. 因为what是宾语从句的主语，语序不变。
