Challenging our ideas EVERY March, Beijing welcomes thousands of visitors from around the country. They are delegates (代表) to meetings of the National People's Congress (NPC, 全国人民代表大会) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC,中国人民政治协商会议).
The delegates give advice and make plans to make our country better. But this year, the advice of some delegates has led to discussion. What did the delegates suggest? What do Teens readers think of their suggestions? Let's have a look.
The "Chinese Yuan" ? ("中华元")
Wu Gang, a CPPCC deputy: "We should change the name of the Renminbi to the ‘Chinese Yuan.' It could help the unity of Chinese people around the world."
Han Lang from Beijing (H): "It's just a name. I don't care whether they change it or not."
Xie Yi from Xiamen (X): "The point is whether you have money, not what it's called."
Shen Pei'er from Shanghai (S): "The name ‘Chinese Yuan' sounds strange. It's like something from the 1930s."
Simple or traditional characters?
Pan Qinglin, a CPPCC deputy: "We should use traditional Chinese characters (繁体字) instead of simplified ones. The traditional characters have deep cultural meanings. It would be good for communication with Taiwan as well."
H: "I partly agree with Mr Pan. But if it turned out we had to learn the traditional characters, I'd have a hard time at school!"
X: "I'm absolutely against it. The simplified characters are already difficult, never mind the traditional ones!"
S: "Why go back to the old days? We are used to simplified characters, so why change things?"
Shorter working week?
CPPCC deputy Zhang Xiaomei: "China should learn from developed countries. The people should work just four and a half days a week rather than five. It would help improve efficiency (效率)."
H: "The issue isn't very close to me. But in primary school I only studied four and a half days a week and that was good. So I'm with Ms Zhang."
X: "It's not a bad idea. The more rest we get, the better. I guess my parents would also be pleased if they could work less."
S: "There's an economic crisis (经济危机) on. People are afraid of losing their jobs so they work harder. Shouldn't we work more to help the economy?"
