Part II      Reading Comprehension    (35 minutes)
Direction:      There are 4 passages in this part. Eachpassage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each ofthem there are four choices marked A), B) C) and D). You should decide on thebest choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a singleline through the center.
Passage One
Questions 11 to 15 are based on thefollowing passage.
Scratchy throats, stuffy noses andbody aches all spell misery, but being able to tell if the cause is a cold or flu(流感)maymake a difference in how long the misery lasts.
The American Lung AssociationALAhasissued new guidelines on combating colds and the flu, and one of the keys isbeing able to quickly tell the two apart. That’s because the prescription drugsavailable for the flu need to be taken soon after the illness sets in. As forcolds, the sooner a person starts taking over-the-counter remedy, the soonerrelief will come.
The common cold and the flu areboth caused by viruses. More than 200 viruses can cause cold symptoms, whilethe flu is caused by three viruses – flu A, B and C. There is no cure foreither illness, but the flu can be prevented by the flu vaccine(疫苗), which is, for most people, thebest way to fight the flu, according to the ALA.
But if the flu does strike, quickaction can help. Although the flu and common cold have many similarities, thereare some obvious signs to look for.
Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, runny nose and scratchy throat typically develop gradually, and adults andteens often do not get a fever. On the other hand, fever is one of thecharacteristic features of the flu for all ages. And in general, flu symptomsincluding fever and chills, sore throat and body aches come on suddenly and aremore severe than cold symptoms.
The ALA notes that it may be particularlydifficult to tell when infants and preschool age children have the flu. Itadvises parents to call the doctor if their small children have flu-like symptoms.
Both cold and flu symptoms can beeased with over-the-counter medications as well. However, children and teenswith a cold or flu should not take aspirin for pain relief because of the riskof Reye syndrome综合症),arare but serious condition of the liver and central nervous system.
There is, of course, no vaccine for the common cold. But frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with people who have colds can reduce thelikelihood of catching one.
11.  According to the author, knowing the cause of the misery will help _______.
      A) shorten the duration of the illness
      B) the patient buy medicine over the counter
      C) the patient obtain cheaper prescription drugs
      D) prevent people from catching colds and theflu
12.  We learn from the passage that _______.
      A) one doesn’t need to take any medicine if hehas a cold or the flu
      B) aspirin should not be included in over-the-counter medicines for theflu
      C) delayed treatment of the flu will harm the liver and central nervoussystem
      D) over-the-counter drugs can be taken to easethe misery caused by a cold or the flu
13.  According to the passage, to combat the flu effectively, _______.
      A) one should identify the virus which causes it
      B) one should consult a doctor as soon aspossible
      C) one should take medicine upon catching thedisease
      D) one should remain alert when the disease isspreading
14.  Which of the following symptoms will distinguish the flu from a cold?
      A) A stuffy nose.                                       C) A sore throat.
      B) A high temperature.                               D) A dry cough.

      A) are advised not to give them aspirin
      B) should watch out for signs of Reye syndrome
      C) are encouraged to take them to hospital forvaccination
      D) should prevent them from mixing with peoplerunning a fever
Passage Two
Questions 16 to 20 are based on thefollowing passage:
In a time of low academicachievement by children in the United States, many Americans are turning to Japan,a country of high academic achievement and economic success, for possibleanswers. However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the onesAmericans expected to find. In most Japanese preschools, surprisingly littleemphasis is put on academic instruction. In one investigation, 300 Japanese and210 American preschool teachers, child development specialists, and parentswere asked about various aspects of early childhood education. Only 2 percentof the Japanese respondents(答问卷者)listed “to give children a good startacademically” as one of their top three reasons for a society to havepreschools. In contrast, over half the American respondents chose this as oneof their top three choices. To prepare children for successful careers in firstgrade and beyond, Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, andmathematics, but rather skills such as persistence, concentration, and theability to function as a member of a group. The vast majority of young Japanesechildren are taught to read at home by their parents.
In the recent comparison ofJapanese and American preschool education, 91 percent of Japanese respondentschose providing children with a group experience as one of their top threereasons for a society to have preschools. Sixty-two percent of the more individually oriented(强调个性发展的)Americans listed group experience as one oftheir top three choices. An emphasis on the importance of the group seen inJapanese early childhood education continues into elementary school education.
Like in America, there is diversity inJapanese early childhood education. Some Japanese kindergartens have specificaims, such as early musical training or potential development. In large cities, some kindergartens are attached to universities that have elementary andsecondary schools. Some Japanese parents believe that if their young childrenattend a university-based program, it will increase the children’s chances ofeventually being admitted to top-rated schools and universities. Several moreprogressive programs have introduced free play as a way out for the heavyintellectualizing in some Japanese kindergartens.
16.  We learn from the first paragraph that many Americans believe _______.
      A) Japanese parents are more involved inpreschool education than American parents
      B) Japan’s economic success is a result ofits scientific achievements
      C) Japanese preschool education emphasizesacademic instruction
      D) Japan’s higher education is superior totheirs
17.  Most Americans surveyed believe that preschools should also attachimportance to _______.
      A) problem solving                                    C) parental guidance
      B) group experience                                   D) individually-oriented development

      B) They can accumulate more group experiencethere.
      C) They can be individually oriented when theygrow up.
      D) They can have better chances of getting afirst-rate education.
Passage Three
Questi0ns 21 to 25 are based on thefollowing passage.
Lead deposits, which accumulatedin soil and snow during the 1960’sand 70’s, were primarily theresult of leaded gasoline emissions originating in the United States. In the twenty yearsthat the Clean Air Act has mandated unleaded gas use in the United States, the leadaccumulation worldwide has decreased significantly.
A study published recently in thejournal Nature shows that air-borneleaded gas emissions from the United Stateswere the leading contributor to the high concentration of lead in the snow in Greenland. The new study is a result of the continuedresearch led by Dr. Charles Boutron, an expert on the impact of heavy metals onthe environment at the National Center for Scientific Research in France. A study by Dr. Boutronpublished in 1991 showed that lead levels inarctic(北极的)snow were declining.
In his new study, Dr. Boutronfound the ratios of the different forms of lead in the leaded gasoline used inthe United Stateswere different from the ratios of European, Asian and Canadian gasolines andthus enabled scientists to differentiate(区分)the lead sources. The dominant lead ratiofound in Greenland snow matched that found in gasoline from the United States.
In a study published in thejournal Ambio, scientists found thatlead levels in soil in the Northeastern United Stateshad decreased markedly since the introduction of unleaded gasoline.
Many scientists had believed thatthe lead would stay in soil and snow for a longer period.
The authors of the Ambio study examined samples of theupper layers of soil taken from the same sites of 30 forest floors in New England, New York andPennsylvaniain 1980 and in 1990. The forest environment processed and redistributed thelead faster than the scientists had expected.
Scientists say both studies demonstrate that certain parts of the ecosystem(生态系统)respond rapidly to reductions in atmospheric pollution, but that thesefindings should not be used as a license to pollute.
21.  The study published in the journal Natureindicates that _______.
      A) the Clean Air Act has not produced thedesired results
      B) lead deposits in arctic snow are on theincrease
      C) lead will stay in soil and snow longer thanexpected
      D) the US is the major source of leadpollution in arctic snow
22.  Lead accumulation worldwidedecreased significantly after the use of unleaded gas in the US________.
      A) was discouraged                                   C) was prohibited by law
      B) was enforced by law                             D) was introduced
23.  How did scientists discover the source of lead pollution in Greenland?
      A) By analyzing the data published in journals like Nature and Ambio.
      B) By observing the lead accumulations in different parts of the arcticarea.
      C) By studying the chemical elements of soil and snow in Northeastern America.
      D) By comparing the chemical compositions of leaded gasoline used invarious countries.
24.  The authors of the Ambiostudy have found that _______.
      A) forests get rid of lead pollution faster thanexpected
      B) lead accumulations in forests are moredifficult to deal with
      C) lead deposits are widely distributed in theforests of the US
      D) the upper layers of soil in forests areeasily polluted by lead emissions
25.  It can be inferred from the last paragraph that scientists _______.
      A) are puzzled by the mystery of forestpollution
      B) feel relieved by the use of unleaded gasoline
      C) still consider lead pollution a problem
      D) lack sufficient means to combat lead pollution
Passage Four
Questions 26 to 30 are based on thefollowing passage.
Exercise is one of the few factorswith a positive role in long-term maintenance of body weight. Unfortunately, that message has not gotten through to the average American, who would rathertry switching to “light” beer and low-calorie bread than increase physicalexertion. The Centers for Disease Control, for example, found that fewer thanone-fourth of overweight adults who were trying to shed pounds said they werecombining exercise with their diet.
In rejecting exercise, some peoplemay be discouraged too much by caloric-expenditure charts: for example, onewould have to briskly walk three miles just to work off the 275 calories in onedelicious Danish pastry(小甜饼). Even exercise professionals concede half apoint here. “Exercise by itself is a very tough way to lose weight,” says YorkOnnen, program director of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness andSports.
Still, exercise’s supporting rolein weight reduction is vital. A study at the Boston University Medical Centerof overweight police officers and other public employees confirmed that thosewho dieted without exercise regained almost all their old weight, while thosewho worked exercise into their daily routine maintained their new weight.
If you have been sedentary(极少活动的)and decide to start walking one mile a day,the added exercise could burn an extra 100 calories daily. In a year’s time, assuming no increase in food intake, you could lose ten pounds. By increasingthe distance of your walks gradually and making other dietary adjustments, youmay lose even more weight.
26.  What is said about the average American in the passage?
      A) They tend to exaggerate the healthful effectof “light” beer.
      B) They usually ignore the effect of exercise onlosing weight.

27.  Somepeople dislike exercise because _______.
      A) they think it is physically exhausting
      B) they find it hard to exercise while on a diet
      C) they don’t think it possible to walk 3 milesevery day
      D) they find consulting caloric-expenditurecharts troublesome
28.  “Even exercise professionalsconcede half a point here” (Line 3, Para. 2) means “They _______”.
      A) agree that the calories in a small piece ofpastry can be difficult to work off by exercise
      B) partially believe diet plays a supportingrole in weight reduction
      C) are not fully convinced that dieting can helpmaintain one’s new weight
      D) are not sufficiently informed of the positiverole of exercise in losing weight
