I shook hands with my father in the truck, and for a long time he looked straight ahead and didnt say a word. But I knew he was going to say a little to me. I cant tell anything, he finally said. I never went to college, and none of your brothers went to college. I cant say dont do this and do that, because everything is different and I dont know what is going to come up. I cant help much with money either, but I think things will work out.
He gave me a new check-book. If things get pushing, write a small check. But when you write one, send me a letter and let me know how much. There are some things we can always sell. In four years all the checks I wrote were less than a thousand dollars. My part-time jobs such as reading to the blind student and sitting with the teachers kids filled in the financial gaps.
You know what you want to be, and theyll tell you what to take, my father went on. When you get a job, be sure its honest, and work hard. I knew that soon I would be alone in the big town, and I would be missing the cool winds and a life where your thinking was done for you.
Then my dad reached down beside his seat and brought the old, broken Bible that he had read so often, the one he used when he wanted to look something up in a friendly quarrel with one of the neighbours. I knew he would miss it. I knew, though, that I must take it.
He didnt tell me to read this every morning. He just said, This can help you if you will let it.Did it help? I got through college without being a burden on the family. I have been able to make money since.

Text 16
Elena was not a good student. Her head was in the clouds most of the time. She wanted to listen in class and to study, but other things were more important, like her clothes, her hairstyle and television.
One day, her English teacher. Mrs Green, said she was going to give an important test. Elena studied all week. She seemed to be there, but her mind was in other places. The day of the test arrived. Elena didnt study very much, and she didnt know many answers. She tried to guess but soon gave up.
Next to Elena sat Ivan, a very hard-working student. Elena didnt want to fail the test, so she decided to copy. She knew it was wrong, but the had no way out. She began to copy all of Ivans answers.
Ivan found what Elena was doing and was very angry. Quickly he changed all his answers so that they were wrong. So did Elena. Then, he quickly changed his answers back. Elena wasnt quick enough and the bell rang. Ivan turned to Elena and laughed.
Honesty is the best policy, he said. Now all your answere are wrong for sure.

Fellow students, I'm glad to share my opinions about how to be popular with others. First, we should always make sure that we keep ourselves healthy, neat and tidy. We should also be friendly others. Another important point is to develop more consideration for others. We should always be ready to help others. Third, we must remember to be ourselves and be sincere to others.
For me, I think its also important to be a good listener and we should never talk about others behind their backs. If we can do all of the above, I am sure we will be popular.
