in the end 最终、结果、终于，意思上相当于finally, at last.

小升初考试中，经常将in the end, at the end, by the end, to the end以及 on the end放在一起以词义辨析的形式出现。

at the end (of) 在…的末端；在…的结尾, to the end 到…的尽头，到底

by the end (of) 到…结束，截止…末尾; on the end没有这种说法，只是用来做混淆项

例题：1. What did you do ______ the end?

A. in  B. at  C. on  D. during

你最后做了什么？根据句义，应该选A。

2.The thieves tried to run away, but the police caught them ________.

A. to the end  B. at the end

  C. by the end  D. in the end.

句义是小偷们试图逃跑，结果还是警察还是抓住了他们，选D。
